Many people with brown eyes dream of having blue or green eyes, and with modern color contacts for dark eyes this are quite possible. Not all color lenses work on dark eyes, but some are doing a pretty good job. Find out how to select the lenses that will work for you.

Manufacturing color lenses that can really transform brown eyes into emerald green or sky blue is not easy, but modern color contact lenses can do it. You just need to select your contacts carefully.

All color contact lenses can be divided into two groups – enhancement color contacts and opaque color lenses. Enhancers give your eyes a tint of blue, green or gray and are designed to enhance your natural color and make your eyes look brighter. They are partially transparent which creates a natural-looking effect. Unfortunately, enhancement color contact lenses don’t work on dark eyes. If a person with brown eyes wears enhancement lenses, they would be either completely invisible or would give only a very light tint that was not enough to change your color.

On the other hand, opaque color contacts were specifically created for brown eyes. The color is not transparent; only the center of the lens is clear, so you can still see. Opaque lenses aren’t solid color, of course: high quality lenses consist of a mixture of colors to simulate the natural pattern of a human eye.

Realistic color contact lenses for dark eyes

The lenses many people find most realistic are Freshlook Colorblends by Ciba Vision. They look very natural because the base color for each lens is actually a mix of three different shades – just like in real human eye. Each lens is lighter toward the middle becoming darker at the edge and it has pattern imprinted on it. Freshlook Colorblends creates vivid, deep color. Freshlook color contacts are monthly disposable color lenses, which means that you have to replace your lenses once a month. Most popular colors are Amethyst, True Sapphire and Green. These lenses are great but there is one disadvantage – they are very fragile and easy to tear when you clean them. So be extra careful, when rubbing Freshlook color contacts.

Acuvue 2 Colors Opaque by Johnson and Johnson also look natural and feel good in your eyes. Unlike Freshlook these color lenses are 2 weeks disposable; this is what the number 2 in its name means. They present two very nice shades of blue color contacts – try Sapphire Blue for a vivid color or Deep Blue for a color of deepest ocean water. Deep Blue works best if you have dark hair. Jade Green and Pearl Grey are also very interesting colors. If you think that grey eyes can’t be exciting, try Pearl Grey – their shimmering color will change your mind.

If you are after light green or blue color lenses than your best choice would be Illusions by Ciba Vision. These are probably the only lenses that create very naturally looking effect of light eyes. Illusions are not disposable lenses; they are traditional annual replacement contacts. They also cost a bit more than Freshlook or Acuvue 2 Colors, but they are well worth the price

Free trial color contacts

Not many people know about it, but color contact lens manufacturers often let you try their lenses for free. You can visit manufacturer website and print a free trial certificate. Then take this certificate to your optometrist and there you will get your trial pair of color contacts absolutely free.

So as you can see, even if you have very dark eyes, you can find color contact lenses that will work for you. Color contacts of high quality feel comfortable and look realistic. Try some, you will love them.

In spite of world events, travel is still an activity that continues to be extremely popular. People will still have the desire to see new places and experience new things in the way that only travel can give them. Because of the importance of travel, an affordable and relatively pain free experience is high on the traveler’s adjenda. A successful trip starts off with proper planning, but many beginner travelers don’t realize that planning your travel budget, is just as important as planning your travel itinerary. The more successful you are with creating a budget that will work for your itinerary, the happier you will be about your travel experience.

Outside of major mishaps that can occur during travel, such as bad weather, theft, and mechanical breakdown, there are some costs that many travelers forget to take into account when budgeting for their trip. These are costs that can’t usually be avoided, but can be easily planned for.

1. Extra Hotel Charges

When most people book hotels online, most times they don’t see the extra taxes and fees included in the prices that are quoted. Sometimes when the quote is given, it will include estimated taxes, but the quote may not list the exact cost. Therefore, you should plan your budget to include unexpected taxes.

Other costs could be movies charged to the hotel room, tipping the concierge, and room service. These charges can vary greatly depending upon how often they are used. Movies charged to a hotel room can be as much as $10 per movie, and room service is usually more expensive than eating out at a restaurant.

The key is to determine before hand, a daily budget for extra hotel charges and stay within that budget. If you choose one day to go over your budget, use it from any leftover balance you may have from the previous days. If you use any of your daily alotment designated for the future days, you run the risk of spending all of your budget for extra hotel charges before your stay is up. Some self control is obviously required, however, it can also lead to having enough to do something really extravagant on your last day.

2. Transportation Costs

Transportation costs include expenses such as cab, bus, or train fares, any rentals of cars, bikes or motorcycles, and also gasoline and parking costs for rented vehicles. Many travelers will take into account the major costs such as car rentals, and even some occassional fares, but may leave out other required costs such as parking, and gas which can add up.

If you plan to travel to a destination where you will need to rent a car, it is a good idea to plan for at least $30 per day for every day you have the car, for parking expenses and gasoline. This amount can vary depending upon the destination, but if you are planning on being in a metropolitan area, you will find out that your $30 daily budget can be eaten away quite easily.

If you are driving to your destination, you should calculate the milage you get per gallon of your vehicle and then calculate the distance you need to drive to your destination and determine how many gallons of gasoline it will take you to get to your destination. Take the national average of the price of a gallon of gasoline, and add an extra 15% on top of that. Then you can determine how much it would cost to get to your destination by car. You should also add the cost of at least two tankfulls of gas once you are at your destination if you plan on using the vehicle after you arrive.

If you plan to use the public transportation system, you can look in any number of the latest guide books to find the expected costs of bus and train fares at your destination. Once you know these, and know your itinerary, you can make a reasonable guess on what your daily budget would be for public transportation. Always add an additional 10-15% for contingencies.

3. Special Attractions and Events

Costs for special attractions and events can really creep into your expenses when you are either traveling to your destination or are at your destination. Occasionally, featured attractions, or other events will pop up on your radar as you go through your itinerary.

When making travel plans, make sure you consider the trip in addtion to your hotel stays along the way, food, and gasoline. Most travelers don’t take into account how they will feel as they are traveling. It could be that at some point along the way, everyone in the car is really getting on everyone’s last nerve, and a movie, or a half day at the amusement park will put everyone in a better mood to complete the trip without it resembling a Jerry Springer episode. Or it could be that your favorite band is performing in the city you will be driving though, and you just can’t pass up that opportunity.

It is usually difficult to know of every last thing before you start your trip, but you should still budget for unexpected activities you may want to do on your way to your destination. It will make traveling much more fun and spontaneous.

Planning your travel budget is something that can be a bit of an art, but there are decisions you can make that will make it less likely you will run out of money before your trip ends. Just take into account your everyday costs and will greatly increase your chances in establishing a budget that will give you enough money to complety your trip with minimal drama. You can easily find information and tips online to help you with your travel plans when setting your budget limits. Go online today to find these resources.

Back in the days when our parents would head out to a convention you may remember them complaining about the transportation provided to them. In many cases, the company hosting the convention would opt to choose the cheapest transportation they could find. Quite often this resulted in an overused bus with no air conditioning or washroom facilities.

Today’s convention travel is much different. Most companies recognize the fact that if they want their employees or clients to have a good time at their gathering; that it needs to start out on the right foot. The traditional convention travel of years past has given way to charter coaches and in some cases luxury vehicles.

For convention travel that is mainly by road, most companies will prefer the luxury of a charter coach. A charter coach is often a large bus with many luxury features. Oversized seats, televisions and washrooms are the norm on many of these types of charters. Guests are welcomed aboard and can take this form of convention travel right to their destination.

For guests who must first travel by airplane to the convention, their transportation will mainly consist of getting them from the airport to the site of the convention. For them, the popular choice seems to be a luxury car. This form of convention travel is usually either a town car or a limousine. The driver is normally instructed to meet the guest when the plane lands and then they are escorted to the waiting car. This leaves a strong, positive impression with the convention guest and they are likely to want to do business with the convention host in the future.

Arranging this form of convention travel isn’t difficult at all. If you have several guests all arriving on the same flight you may want to offer a ride that has more room such as a stretch limousine or an oversized luxury van. It’s important that your guests don’t have to search for their own transportation in the form of a taxi or rental car. If you have invited them, it’s your job to find suitable convention travel arrangements for them.

With the low cost of most forms of convention travel, it’s easy to see why many companies are choosing to treat their guests to a comfortable ride. After all, your guests will remember each part of their experience, and you need to ensure there isn’t anything negative for them to point out in the future.

The Human Resource staff of cruise line companies are seriously busy people! They’re overworked and overwhelmed with deadlines. Running it is a HUGE operation.

There is always a mountain of paper work to complete, people pestering them on the phone for a job, hundreds of emails to respond to and on top of that, stacks of resumes arriving daily to plough through. Not to mention the hundreds of crew members coming and going every single week of the year. Madness!

For this reason there are some important “Do’s and Don’ts” that you absolutely must adhere to when you begin contacting cruise lines for a job. And if you follow them, it will ensure that your application gets through to the right person and actually gets looked at.

Here’s a few:

DON’T telephone a cruise line company, unless they specifically ask you too. Phone calls are their absolute LEAST favorite way of being contacted! They’re busy enough as it is, without fielding hundreds of phone calls from people pestering them for jobs!

Instead follow the application procedure that they have put in place. This is usually via an online application form, a postal address or email.

DO drop them a short friendly email informing them that you’ve just posted your resume to them or that you have just applied via their website.

Sending an email like this has a couple of advantages. Firstly, it can signal you out from the crowd as someone polite and ‘customer aware’. Secondly, it also gets your name recognized and they might just give your resume that extra bit of attention when it arrives.

DON’T send your resume as an email ‘attachment’ unless they’ve specifically asked you to. Many companies nowadays will NOT open attachments from people they don’t know. The threat of viruses is too great and they will not risk it (myself included).

What’s more, many companies have systems in place that will automatically delete any email not recognized, that contains an attachment. So your brilliant ‘killer’ resume won’t even get delivered, nevermind read!

The best way of sending a resume by email is to “copy & paste” it into the body of the email.

DO send a resume package through the mail. Nowadays everybody just emails everybody, and again companies have a lot of filters in place to protect themselves from harmful virus’s and SPAM, so there’s a good chance that your email won’t get delivered.

Not only that, a nicely presented resume package sent through the mail with a photograph will always, always get more attention than a resume sent by email.

The faces of those men, frantically driving around in the airport parking area in unending circles – always made me burst into laughter! Well, I know, it’s utterly inhumane to laugh at those poor souls who have little time left to report for their flights, yet do not know where to park their cars in the airport!

But what is the solution? Of course you can avail the services of public transport. But just think about the degree of struggle you have to take up to reach to the airport along with your luggage!

Then there are the cabs hundreds and thousands of them just ready to serve you! It is no doubt convenient, but the taxi fair? Who is going to pay it by the way, not your father or anybody else I presume. So the expensive cab riding is also ruled out. Then what is left?

The only solution to this logistic problem lies in driving the car yourself up to airport. What are you telling, parking in the airport is a kind of nightmare? Nay, as long as you book the parking place in advance, parking in the airport is the easiest job in the world and driving to the airport is the most convenient logistic solution.

To begin from the scratch, reserving airport parking is fast and easy; only you need an internet connection, that’s all.

There are several web based companies that offer you this facility of online airport parking booking. These are kinds of airport parking brokers who have arrangement with several airport parking companies all around the globe. Make a little research on the internet and find out the suitable online booking service provider.

The next step involves selecting your departure airport, the expected time of arrival for parking and the return date. On pressing the search button you will be directed to a matrix of airport parking lots close to the terminals of selected airport. The map will be there to help you take the decision. You will also be able to compare between different range of prices, and choose from different types of parking – self, valet, covered etc.

In choosing the parking lot, keep in mind the terminal distance and also your specific vacation or business travel needs.

After you have selected the right parking lot, you will be directed to checkout page and furnish all the information relating to your billing address and registration information. After that press the confirm button to make the reservation.

Now, do not forget to take the print out of the receipt to the airport. Otherwise the whole efforts will have no value.

So you see, the entire process of the booking is extremely hassle free, only you have to be quick in your proceeding to grab the best quote.

All these prices can be assorted between a minimum and a maximum. This is justified with the position and structure of the different rooms: the widest, more comfortable rooms, with view, the quieter etc., are more expensive than the smaller, darker, and noisier of the hotels. Therefore prices varied from a minimum to a maximum for the single rooms without bathroom, for the single ones with bathroom, for the double with and without bathroom and, consequently, for the treatment of half pension and complete pension.

Besides the price also depends on who makes the reservations in the hotels if it’s the client, the agency or the tour operator. The prices of the rooms, with included IVA, must be shown in all rooms. The prices of the other hotel services should be exposed in rooms commonly used. Of course, hotel clients cannot be asked amounts higher than the ones requested in the lists, or agreed during the reservations. The prices of Italian hotels are the target of criticism for many parts. Statistically they are among the highest in the world, because hotel owners have a tendency to declare extremely high maximum prices. In fact, the most diverse rates are paid, according to the season, the client, the development of the hotel market, the type of reservation. The result is that few the clients pay the published rates. And the minimum rate is sometimes a tenth of the maximum price.

Except for particular cases, the license of hotel exercise foresees the obligation of opening of local throughout the year, excluding a period of vacations that should be agreed with the municipal authorities and stated to Public Security authorities. Only in towns that are temporary tourist destinations can be given licenses that foresee the opening for certain periods in the year. Opening schedules during the day are set by the Public Security authority, in accordance with the Mayor. The exercise license can be suspended to a hotel that has closes for more than eight days without giving word to the Public Security authority.

Hotel contract and hotel reservation

The hotel contract following the hotel reservation, is the one specified between the hotel owner and the client. The obligations the hotel assumes with this contract are:

- the lodging supply and food to the client and the benefit of all services foreseen by the structure of the hotel (bar, television, telephone, alarm clock, laundry etc.),
- the responsibility towards people:
- a doctor should be called if they get sick
- should verify they don’t have infectious illnesses
- should make the obligatory authentication in the event of death
- it’s responsible with the parents and midwife for the accusations of birth
- should reimburse those who suffer damages for their responsibility (for example anyone who falls on the stairways that haven’t had an appropriate maintenance);
- the responsibility with things on behalf of the clients, according to what’s foreseen by the articles of the civil code.

The client’s obligations (booked)

- the payment of the preset price or foreseen in the lists and arranged at the moment of the hotel reservation;
- the respect of the times of arrival and departure foreseen by the contract and of the reservation of the hotel; with this purpose it’s stressed that, except other agreements, the room that has been booked, is occupied between 18.00 in the day of arrival and vacant before 14.00 in the day of departure;
- the care of the local in which the client is lodged, keep their integrity;
- the prohibition of developing in the hotel room any activity, particularly those dangerous or annoying, like ironing, cooking in the hotel, to make noise, etc..

The hotel contract is not a contract-type, in other words it’s not expressly regulated by the civil code. This fact sometimes leaves space to differentiated interpretations, especially those that have to do with the reservation of the hotel. Among the most common unfulfilments on behalf of clients are the following:

- the client’s non arrival who had already made the reservation of the hotel. The hotel owner protects himself making advance payment as guarantee, if the client regularly uses the services, it also works as an advance payment of the final bill, if the client doesn’t use the reserved services, it’s then retained as compensation by the hotel;
- the client’s delayed arrival or premature departure which forces the hotel owner to lose the possibility to dedicate the rooms to other clients that had been reserved;
- the not payment of the bill on behalf of the client. In this case the hotel owner is entitled to have the client’s baggage levy for an official, as a guarantee of his credit.

The hotel owner’s most common unfulfilment is given when the client who has made the reservation of the hotel, doesn’t find it free as agreed. In this case the client who has given a guarantee is entitled to a compensation that comes up to double this guarantee.

Hotel booking and types of hotel contracts

To illustrate this topic we refer, as an example, to an “International Hotel Convention regarding contracts among hotel owners and travel agents”, convention carried out between the A.I.H. and the F.U.A.A.V. some years ago.
a) Each hotel contract should be preceded of applications of hotel booking on behalf of the travel agent and directed to the hotel owner.
b) Each unwritten hotel reservations application will be confirmed by means of a written document (letter, telegram, telex, electronic, etc.).
c) Each application hotel booking should specify the benefits offered. The cost of these may be mentioned in the same document. In this case the payment will be guaranteed only by the travel agent until he gets knowledge of the amount mentioned.

Acceptance of hotel reservations applications on behalf of the hotel owner

a) The hotel contract won’t be definitive until the acceptance of the hotel booking on behalf of the hotel owner, made according to dispositions of art.
11 a).
b) Such an acceptance of the hotel reservations will consist on a written document (letter, telegram, telex, electronic, etc.) specifically referring to the application and mentioning the price of the ordered services.
c) This confirmation of the hotel booking should take place immediately or, at least, three days after receiving the application on behalf of the hotel owner.
d) Where the travel agent demands a telegraphic reply, he should use the form of “paid reply”.

With the different kinds of spa vacations available and the differing programs they offer it’s important to ask yourself a few things, and to make sure you answer those questions honestly. Why are you taking a spa vacation? Are you looking to relax, learn to eat healthy, exercise or get pampered?

Many spas cover all of those reasons, but you’ll have better luck getting exactly what you want if you take a spa vacation at one whose programs cater specifically to one or a few of the needs you’re looking to fulfill. For example, destination spas tend to work more towards helping guests learn to eat healthy and exercise right with a series of fitness and cooking classes while spas nestled in resorts, often called resort spas, cater more towards relaxing and being pampered.

What Kinds of Vacation Activities Are You Interested In?

If you’re looking for more to do than just work towards a healthier sense of well-being a resort spa might be a better spa vacation for you. There are a number of destination spas that do offer on-site golfing or tennis, as well as near-by access to hiking, fishing, museums and other cultural activities as well, though. Before setting up a spa vacation, check the local area for other activities you might like if you don’t think you’ll be focusing solely on what your spa has to offer.

Will You Be Traveling With a Friend, A Spouse, or Alone?

When traveling alone it can be easier to determine where to go, but a like-minded friend or spouse can help motivate you and keep you on the right track. If there is anyone joining you on your spa vacation that might not be interested in the activities a spa has to offer, it’s recommended that you look into a resort spa where there is plenty of other things to do. That way you can get the relaxation you need without worrying as much about your traveling companion(s) being bored.

Would You Prefer a Scheduled Spa Vacation, or Would You Prefer To Set Your Own Schedule?

Destination spas often offer a set program of activities and classes specifically designed to improve health through diet, exercise and healthy thinking. If you’re more the sort to rebel against scheduling and go do your own thing, you might prefer a resort spa where you have more freedom to come and go as you please without interrupting others. A benefit to a set schedule while on a spa vacation, however, is that it can help keep you on track and focused on what you came to the spa to accomplish in the first place.

What Type of Scenery Do You Prefer?

If you head to a destination spa out in the mountains but aren’t fond of heights, cool breezes and thinner air then it’s quite likely that you won’t enjoy yourself as much as you would have if a spa vacation with an ocean setting had been chosen instead. Setting can be important to many people when it comes to relaxing, because if you can’t relax with the scenery surrounding you then you’re likely to either be unable to concentrate on that relaxing massage or fitness class, or get more irritated with the world in general. The more you like your location, the more chance that spa vacation has a chance to work its magic on you.

How Long of a Vacation Did You Plan to Take?

If you only have a day or two to wash away your stresses try looking into a resort spa, as shortest programs at destination spas tend to last a full week. Day Spa’s offer a variety of professionally administered spa services to clients on a day-use basis. A day spa is a form of beauty salon for your entire body! So even if you only plan to take a “day away” there is a day spa that is right for you.

Destination spa’s are resorts for personal care treatments. The primary purpose of destination spa’s is guiding individual spa-goers to develop healthy habits. While a week or two at a dedicated destination spa might do more for you than a simple day-trip would it’s still good to take what you can get when trying to deal with the stresses of our modern-day world. After all, even in our modern world this saying applies: “an ounce of prevention is still worth a pound of cure”!

French chateaux were usually constructed in enviable locations, with stunning vistas over rural France. You can take in the countryside from your room in a castle on top of a hill. Historically castles were usually built atop hills for obvious strategic defence. They provide a retreat where you can wind down, rest your weary feet and take advantage of the host’s outstanding local knowledge. The chateau styles vary depending upon the location in France, and the era in which they were built.

Design

French chateaux have design running through their core and it is a pleasure to stay somewhere that’s been designed and decorated with an eye for detail and finish. From the fine architectural details, like stunning plaster work, sweeping stone staircases, parquet floors, gorgeous tiling, wrought iron balustrades, beautiful marble and stone fireplaces, trumeau mirrors, trompe l’oeil paintings, magnificent french chandeliers and sconces. Everything in a French chateau is typically design-led.
French chateaux were built with a fastidious eye for fine detail. Remember that the French under Louis XIV set the standards of sophistication, style, and glamour that still rule our lives today. Remember that before his reign began, his nation had no particular association with elegance, yet by its end the French had become accepted all over the world as the arbiters in matters of taste and style and that France had established a dominance in the luxury trade that still continues today.

Size

By their nature, chateaux are large pieces of architect. However the reception rooms on the ground floor are typically huge and wonderful rooms to relax in and soak up the ambience. French chateaux lend themselves perfectly for wedding venues. Sometimes a reception room may house a Michelin-starred restaurant. If it does not then usually there is one not too far away.

The premium bedrooms or suites are normally on the first floor and are usually palatial built for the original creators of these architectural treasures. Do not be surprised if the ensuite is bigger than a whole floor of your own residence. The upper floors which usually have a lower ceiling height were reserved for the incredible number of full-time staff required to keep a chateau running like clockwork even at the beginning of the last century.

Chateaux normally lord over a domaine which historically necessitated wood-cutters, and ground staff on top of house staff. Remember these gems were built before the invention of lawn mowers and chain-saws. Ten gardeners used to do the work of a gardener today with all of his modern equipment. This ratio is pretty typical of the historical staff numbers required in the kitchen and the laundry too.

Big is not necessarily better. Huge chateau hotels often house their guests in converted outbuildings, with the coach-house being a favourite. Some chateaux owners reduce the number of rooms available so that they can increase the size of the rooms and the public spaces and provide a better service. How many rooms the chateau offers affects the ambience and the service. Do your homework or you could be sharing your lovely intimate chateau experience with 60 other couples all of them eager to experience the grandeur of life living like royalty in a French chateau.

Service

Service is all-important in French chateaux. Hosts ensure that guests want for nothing, and yet the service is discreet, so guests don’t feel hassled or intimidated. The lower number of guests at a French chateau means that the service can be impeccable, and it usually is.

Price

The term “chateau” may give the impression that they are incredibly expensive, but that’s not the case. In fact, you may be surprised by how affordable many of them are. For the same price or maybe just a little more than you might pay for a very ordinary chain hotel, you could be staying somewhere with real atmosphere and real service.

With the growing awareness about global warming has come an increasing pressure on the travel industry, in particular aviation, to take steps towards the off setting of carbon emissions. According to figures from the Stern Review the contribution of aircraft to global warming is 3% today and could rise to 5% by 2050. And although aircraft emissions are the fastest growing source of greenhouse gases, cracking down on flights isn’t going to save the world. In comparison road transport accounts for 10%, electricity generation 24% and deforestation 18% (half of this last figure is due to deforestation in just two countries alone, Brazil and Indonesia).
People, however, ignore these facts. Many feel that holiday travel is a luxury and therefore discretionary. In effect, if we are serious about saving the planet then it is something which we can cut without too many far reaching consequences. Rather than people campaigning for cleaner nuclear energy or the preservation of forests they prefer the moralistic feeling of raging against the jetsetters and western consumerism.
This is where the moral pressure to plant trees, buy carbon credits and offset our carbon footprint comes from. But the very idea that we can plant our way out of climate change is faintly ridiculous. There’s recent research to suggest that planting trees in Northern climes may actually trap heat leading to an increase in global warming. Trees suck up CO2 but in temperate latitudes absorb a lot of heat without losing much moisture; and when the trees burn or decompose the carbon is released back into the atmosphere. And, it would take a forest the size of Dorset to be planted each year, ad infinitum, to offset the UKs carbon emissions – any benefits of which would take years to materialise.
Other offset schemes, such as buying energy efficient light bulbs and stoves for the developing world, may be better. However, there is an underlying problem with the concept of carbon offsets. Rather than seeking ever more ingenious ways to offset pollution we should be trying to produce less of it in the first place.
But there is now a burgeoning industry of offsetting firms, mostly in the US and UK, each happy to calculate our carbon debt and each offering a bewildering array of away to neutralise it from planting trees in Dorset to building wind farms in India. ABTA, which represents 70% of British travel agents; has recently announced offsetting schemes and last minute.com has an offsetting option on its booking page. But do these schemes actually accomplish much? According to a study by the respected US charity, Clean Air-Cool Planet, the answer is, perhaps surprisingly, often no. The study gave a mere eight out of thirty companies a score of more than five out of ten.
Many of the schemes – be they planting trees, using bio fuels, or installing solar power – would have occurred anyway and so don’t offset anything. It’s also extremely difficult to know whether the offsets you have purchased have been sold more than once as there is no record of what has already been done. And, more cynical, consumer guilt over the environmental cost of flying represents huge dividends for those peddling the offset schemes. Another problem is that calculations for CO2 offset often vary widely. A report in the magazine Nature showed calculations for the CO2 emissions per person on a return flight from Bangkok to London varying between 2.1 to 9.9 tons of CO2.
Wind farms, solar panels, installing energy efficient light bulbs, low flow showers and energy efficient wood burning stoves are just some of the options available. But even green groups such as Friends Of The Earth remain sceptical. Given scale of the problem which faces us today we might as well try “stopping sea levels rising by drinking a glass of water”. Indeed, UK consumers only offset 1% of Britain’s annual emissions.
Certainly greater clarity is needed in the offset industry and people need to realise that it isn’t the answer to climate change. The reduction of emissions is far more effective than compensating for those already released. This does seem to be the growing consensus, that carbon offsets are just a way for the comfortable off to salve their consciences without actually making any sacrifices. Perhaps the future lies not in carbon offsets but in rigorous carbon allowances for businesses and individuals and allowing the trading in such allowances to develop.
The most environmentally friendly thing would be to stop flying and stop going on holidays. This is not realistically going to happen, so people need to take their holidays in the most environmentally friendly way possible. So from now think about your carbon footprint before you jet off on holiday and check to see whether your travel company or tour operator has an environmental policy; then you’ll be on your way to becoming an eco-friendly traveller.
